Marbles - daybreak.jpg (18185 bytes)So here is one of the highlights of the Stuart Highway... which is not too difficult considering how long straight and lonely the road is.

The Devils Marbles are the remains of a single sandstone escarpment that cracked through erosion and then 'exfoliated' over thousands of years under the intense sun and strong winds to produce rocks which are round or egg  shaped - often perched precariously on each other.

The Aborigines believe they are the eggs of the Rainbow Serpent.

It is a magical and mystical place - and the scene at sunrise spectacular beyond words.  However, they hold a special significance for me as it was a photo of Isobel's shadow on one of the rocks which galvanised my desire to visit Australia in the first place.  Thanks Iso!
