I meet Alistair, a good
friend from Inktomi who oddly enough is Australian but forever bumping into me
elsewhere – last we met was after a drunken afternoon at the Boat Show in Earl
Court where Big Dave, Flack and I had spent several hours drinking bubbly for
free at the Tattinger stand owing to the fact that the staff kept putting full
bottles in an ice bucket too close our one purchased bottle.
Alistair happened to be in a local pub we bumbled into afterwards
awaiting his visa for the USA where he was to work for a year or two. He is home because he is waiting for his visa to work in the
USA… We stroll along circular
quay and lunch near the Opera house – looking over toward the Coat Hanger
(Sydney Harbour Bridge). This place
is larger than life! All of the guidebooks say that the first thing to do is get on the water from Circular Quay and survey the City – I indulge them. Its blowing a bitter wind and I’m surrounded by the most archetypal American and Japanese tourists I’ve ever seen. The Americans are obese and very loud and the Japanese are taking turns to have pictures taken on the bow of the boat - totally ignoring the incredible scenery. Thank god I’m not a typical British tourist, I look on with a stiff upper lip and sip tea in my Union Jack T-shirt nonchalantly.
