Lake Wabby - sandblow.jpg (63721 bytes)One of Fraser Islands wonders is the fresh water lakes which pepper the south of the island.

Lake Wabbi is apparently the highest 'Perched Lake' in the Southern Hemisphere. Regrettably I cannot recall what this means but it doesn't matter much as a sand-blow from its North side is engulfing it at a rate of 3m per year - so in a decade or two this (along with the Menaho) will be consigned to the history books.

Some of the lakes contain a deep red tainted water - caused by tannins leeched from decaying trees which which passes through white sands without filtration. Apparently this is very good for the skin, but we did not fancy swimming in what looked like an Alfred Hitchcock bathtub.

Lake McKenzie - orange filter.jpg (63566 bytes)Fortunately, most of the lakes are full of crystal clear water. By far the most famous, and deservedly so in my opinion, being McKenzie. Around half a kilometre in diameter and surrounded by a white sand beach with paper-barks, eucalypts and mangroves, this lake is a joy to dive into.

The sands slope slowly at first then plunge into murky depths which throw back shafts of sunlight like a mirror ball.

Lake McKenzie - baby turtle.jpg (39690 bytes)Lake McKenzies inhabitants include frogs, small fish and turtles, one of which came to say 'hello'.

Nice turtle that Terry...
