Jim Jim falls.jpg (33633 bytes)Moving on from Twin Falls, we spend the next day at Jim Jim Falls.  These are only accessible via a short hike and the river itself - a 1km swim with freshwater crocodiles!

Its bitterly cold - not just the water but also the lack of sun in this enclosed gorge.  Chris, my tent-mate from Jim Jim & Jason.jpg (44253 bytes)Brussels, has to stop three-quarters of the way up as he gets an attack of the shivers; the rest of us make it and are rewarded with a spectacular view of the waterfall.

Naturally, what goes up must come down - and we swim back after a couple of hours here, stopping en-route to collect Chris in a rubber tyre innard.

Kakadu Huntsman.jpg (35543 bytes)Back at camp, we meet our first nasty, a Huntsman Spider which has attached itself to the side of the trailer.

I use a frying pan to scoop this monster up and fling it into the bush some 10 feet away where it thuds to the ground audibly.  It then scuttles straight back to the trailer - we let it camp with us...

Kakadu sunset from camp lookout.jpg (28859 bytes)Later, we take a walk up to Budjmii lookout and watch the sun set over the distant ranges.  Tom teaches us a new trick on the way back - holding a torch at eye level to the side of your head you can spot the reflections of spiders eyes - we test this and find numerous small beasties.  Our experimenting with a twig shows that most will attack when provoked - all seem to want to bite.  One has another trick - it bites the stick then jumps, sending us all reeling backwards.  Don't mess with Australian spiders!
