I'm on a Wilderness 4x4 adventure - heading into Kakadu national park with
eight fellow adventurous people.
We
head into the park and stop off for at Barramundi gorge where we take a
bush-walk to the top of a sandstone escarpment and rest in the mid day heat near
a series of small rock pools - taking a swim in the cool waters and diving under
overhangs which link several of them.
Next,
we stop for firewood on the edge of the park and get covered in soot and dust as
we scramble around an area which has been razed by a bushfire. These will
become a common sight since the Aboriginal people and rangers burn the bush
deliberately at this time to prevent wild-fire when it gets 'really dry'.
To
add to our excitement, our guide Tom lays on
a flat tire within minutes of getting off-road. We discuss the frequency
of this, and, to temp fate, agree that it 'would never happen twice on a trip'.
What follows is three further days of camping out under stars, fabulous
scenery, bush-walks, fantastic waterfalls and
plenty of fresh water streams to swim in plus a trip along a croc
infested river.
