Formed
190,000 years ago, the Undara lava tubes are huge capillaries left over some 150
volcanoes spewed lava over a 1500 square kilometres.
Mighty impressive statistics, shame about the tour...
Steve and I took the half day tour, and discovered that a one hour tour would
have been as interesting (if not more so) since the two options cover the same
distance - around 3/4 of a kilometre.
Highlights
were the discovery of spear-grass, a particularly nasty reproducer which, when
whetted with a little spit (to simulate rain) begins to unwind and burrow into
whatever its near to. Apparently getting it stuck in your sweaty sock can
result in it burrowing into your skin - Nice!
For this reason, sheep are not found in this part of Australia - their wool
picked up the grass and their sweat caused the stuff to burrow into them,
killing hundreds before the cause was found.
Anyway,
back to the tubes - there are 9 visited tubes out of around 300, many are full
of carbon dioxide and consequently not too healthy for tourists, the rest are
filled with sleep inducing guides. Be warned...
Yawn! Cor, I suddenly feel very, very sleee ppp yy.
