Menaho Wreck - Panorama.jpg (40015 bytes)

While on her way to Japan to be decommissioned and scraped, the Mehano run aground to save all hands in a cyclone.

Originally a full scale passenger liner - a mini titanic -today all that remains is a rusty skeleton of the top deck and superstructure poking out of the sands.

At high tide the surf roll into the bowels of the wreck, pounding what remains. But unlike the Yongala which we visited a few weeks back, the Mehano does not have a protective coral coating - it is gradually rusting away from the top, and slowly sinking into the shifting sands. A decade from now all that will remain will be the tips of the steam anchors.

With the orange glow of the afternoon sunlight, spray created by the surf and stark backdrop of golden sand, this was a photographic Mecca.
