Every
year between mid-July and late October some twelve hundred Humpback whales migrate from
the breeding grounds in North Queensland toward the South Pole feeding grounds
with their new born calves. They stop off in Hervey Bay to rest and feed their
young - enabling them to develop blubber before the migration to the cold waters
lower down.
Until
1960, Hervey Bay was a hub for Australia's Whaling Fleet. Today it is home to a fleet
of tourist operators who guarantee a sighting or your next trip is free. Around
this time, they rarely have to resort to this pledge.
