Kia Ora. Welcome to New Zealand.

Hells Gate - Pam stews son.jpg (81724 bytes)My first tour of New Zealand is made with my delightful mother, Pam, in late spring. A trip which will take in the highlights of the North Island given the shortness of our short stay.

New Zealand. Land of the long white cloud, of volcanoes, the All Blacks and Lamb Chops. Yes, the place where men are men and sheep are apparently nervous...

Its a place totally unlike its closest neighbour, Australia - golden beaches are replaced by rocky coastline, vast desert plains replaced by undulating baize covered hills and sandstone escarpments are replaced by dramatic volcano cones, some of which are still active.

Beginning in Auckland, we travel through the thermal heartland of Rotarua and down to the wine growing regions of Hawkes Bay before turning North to survey the coastline and the untouched beauty of the Northlands.

Several months later, early into the new year, I re-visit New Zealand. Picking up where I "left off" on the southward trek, in the Capital - Wellington. This time, my companion is the lovely Isobel.

From here, after a night of outstanding dining, chatter and grooving with the inimitable Fi and Evan, Isobel and I head south over Marlborough Sound to Picton by ferry and set foot on the South Island. Its another whistle-stop tour - 11 days.  But no less exciting or enchanting.
