More fabulous scenery, endless road and then we  stopped at Waiwera.  We were not too far from Auckland again and here was a lovely spa village by the sea.

Luckily, since it was Friday, we got a cabin for the night and excitedly donned our cossies and headed for the “film pool”.  What bliss to sit in a spa and watch a movie on a huge screen..

However, by the time we got through the turnstiles our worst fears were realised.  It was packed to the gunwales and there were hordes of children around.  We didn’t stop.  Our money was refunded – to our surprise, and then we tried to find a restaurant but the only place was Woody’s!   What can we say about Woody’s!   On first passing it we sneered openly at the menu card and walked on.  After 20 minutes of trotting down a dirt road, we worked out that there was no more village left so we crept ingratiatingly back and ordered some Enchiladary thing which was only just edible.

The wine list was pretty good though and we persuaded Woody to let us take one back to the room.  It was not lawful so we pretended we would drink it on the verandah and snuck back to the cabin.  Must have been good wine because I had left my jacket on the chair back complete with credit cards.  However Woody had it safe ,and just as well as we had gone off without paying our bill.  Ho! Ho!  We all laughed it off but it was a bit worrying.  Anyway before long we were on our way back to Auckland.

We arrived very late and because the equivalent of the Chelsea Flower Show was in full swing there was a dire shortage of rooms.  Jason finally found a B&B, it was dark and I noticed a lot of young Japanese hanging around the office.   We slept okay but in the morning I tried to make coffee and was amused to discover that the little kitchen had been built to Japanese height.  It was so dinky.  Looking into an under-sink cupboard required one to lie on the floor.  We had a last good dinner at The Old Customs House in Auckland.  Very posh and still cheap.  More seafood and best Aussie Chardy.  Found one of those “outlet centres” and had a happy little shop before boarding our plane for Sydney.
